The Costly Gift
The Costly Gift is a documentary film by London based Eritrean Director Dawit Gebreyesus that, tells the story Biniam who dreams of becoming an international footballer, though he has never owned a football. Fortunately for Biniam, relatives, who live in the USA, send him a football. However, grandfather Tsgai insists that Biniam must work and study at school to attain such a “costly gift”.
The film metaphorically examines the real burden of ‘food aid’ by exposing the limitations and reliance imposed upon Biniam’s family, further examining the conflicts inherent in the ‘generation gap’. Elders recognize self-reliance as the only option in life and the younger generation imagines escape from poverty in the form of unrealistic dreams.
The premier screening of The Costly Gift will take place on the 7th of November from 7-9pm at SOAS, Russell Square: College Buildings Room: DLT and will be followed by a Q&A with the director.
