2011 promises to be a good year for music crowd funding platform Africa Unsigned. Muthoni The Drummer Queen is the first artist from the Africa Unsigned roster to reach her target of $5.000, which is completely made possible by crowd funding. Thanks to the crowd funding contribution she is back in the studio to record a new EP and shoot a video to be released in the spring 2011.
Musically mashing up different styles and genres Muthoni was nominated for a MTV Africa Music Award, in the category Brand New, for her debut album released on the Kenyan label Penya Africa.
Africa Unsigned is a young and innovative company geared towards promoting the New African Sound. Unsigned artists record music funded by fans. A selection of music experts, including Baba Maal, Damon Alborn (Gorillaz, Blur) and Tony Allen (Fela Kuti) select the artists who raise funds via Africa Unsigned. Artists that reach the target amount, hit the studio to record a professional mini album. The music is distributed to all major music stores including iTunes and Amazon. The generated income is shared equally between the artist and supporters.
